Luis Robles, Inter Miami’s first captain, announced that he is retiring from professional fútbol. The goalkeeper’s exemplary career comes to an end after 14 years, nine MLS seasons, eight with the New York Red Bulls and one final year with Inter Miami.
“Luis will forever be an important part of this Club’s history and we thank him for his leadership, attitude and work ethic every day on and off the field,” said Inter Miami CF Managing Owner Jorge Mas. “We wish him well in the future and are excited for what is next for him.”
Robles, 36, signed with Inter Miami in the early going, becoming just the 16th player signed to the Club on Dec. 2, 2019 and was named captain on Feb. 25, 2020. Days later, he led Inter Miami in its debut match against on March 1. Robles started in that match, making a number of standout saves, amassing eight in total, which would remain a season high.
Robles started every match he was available for in 2020. On Sep. 9, he helped guide the team to a 2-1 home victory over Atlanta United FC with one of his most memorable moments: a penalty was awarded to Atlanta but the captain was up to the challenge, diving to his right to save Ezequiel Barco’s shot. A follow-up effort to Robles’ save found the back of the net and appeared to give Atlanta a goal, but after video review the attempt had to be retaken. Robles once again stepped up, this time diving to his left and once again saving Barco’s effort from the spot.
The goalkeeper enjoyed significant success in MLS, winning the Supporters’ Shield with the Red Bulls in 2013, 2015 and 2018. He was also named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2015. Robles also holds the record for most consecutive MLS regular season starts, being named to the Red Bulls starting eleven 183 times in a row from 2012 to 2018.
The captain also shined off the field, earning the team’s nomination for MLS Works Humanitarian of the Year. Robles dedicated himself to humanitarian efforts in his new city, participating in a toy drive, a food drive for COVID-19 relief in conjunction with DeliverLean, and a back to school event presented by Gallagher, delivering backpacks with tablets to students to support virtual learning, among other things.
Inter Miami CF would like to thank Luis for contributions on and off the field and wishes him all the best in his next steps.
