Inter Miami visited Nissan Stadium on Sunday for a valiantly fought battle against Nashville SC. The visitors left with the team’s first clean sheet of the season and a few standout moments for Inter Miami players.
Notably, a number of players made their first starts or appearances of the season in the match, including defender Ryan Shawcross, who made his first start and earned Heineken Man of the Match honors.
“Very pleased with the point for the team. First of all, I think it’s a really well-deserved point. We probably had the better chances...it’s a really positive result in a game away from home, so that's always a plus,” said Shawcross.
Following the match, Shawcross reflected upon his progress in the buildup to his full debut, expressing his thankfulness to those who have helped him recover and return to full fitness.
“It’s been a lot of hard work from the medical team to really get me in a good position to play games. Obviously I've had a bit of time to settle in, it's been over five to six weeks, they’ve worked really hard and the fitness guys gave me that opportunity to go out and play 90 minutes.”
Shawcross also touched on the budding relationship with his partner in the center of defense, Leandro González Pirez, as well as the other regular center backs on the roster.
“The relationship with Leandro is brilliant. He is a good player, he’s strong, the aggressive type of defender I like in that last part where you need defenders. We’ve got that in abundance, with [Nicolás] Figal, me, Christian [Makoun], some real strong aggressive defenders and to rack up clean sheets this season and to go out and have a very successful season.”
Head coach Phil Neville also expressed his delight with the performance from Shawcross, highlighting the defender’s comfort in the match.
“I was delighted with Ryan, didn’t surprise me one bit. He just came in and looked like he’s been playing MLS fútbol all his life. That’s what he’s been like since day one,” said Neville.
