Inter Miami began small group training today at Inter Miami CF Training Complex after nearly a month of voluntary individual workouts. The players returned to the pitch but were now able to pass a ball with one another while maintaining distance and following the direction of local public health officials and government policies.
“I think what was awesome about the small group trainings was the fact that we got to pass the ball to each other, to interact in a more realistic perspective,” said Wil Trapp. “That was amazing for us as players. We actually got to work on tactical concepts that we’ve only been able to speak about conceptually. To be back on the field in that context is amazing.”
“Just that little bit of something new, something desired, it changes a lot in our mentality.”
“I think the synchronization of us getting back on the same page, of the chemistry and building those connections, will once again come quickly because although we haven’t been able to physically interact with each other, I think we’ve done a good job of connecting on a social level throughout this entire ideal,” added Trapp. “The hope is that we can draw upon those relationships quickly and get back to something on the field that resembles exactly what we want.”
Team captain Luis Robles shared many of the same sentiments as Trapp, sharing his excitement at being able to pass the ball among teammates for the first time in months.
“It’s really nice that today we’re on the field and we were able to take the next step into the next phase, small group training. As we go into phase two in small group training, we get to pass the ball to each other and that’s amazing,” said Robles. “As it continues to progress and there’s testing, we hope to get to the next phase and get to full group training. I think at that point it will become a little more real.”
"I know it will continue to evolve as we get closer to full group training, as we get closer to competition, but for us right now we’ll take what we can get and it’s really nice that we’re able to make the progress that we have,” added Robles.
In addition to expressing excitement at being able to pass to teammates, Lee Nguyen looked to the prospect of further developments to come in the future.
“Being able to play with the ball today was refreshing,” said Nguyen. “I think everybody was super excited to be able to pass to somebody other than the cooler. The chemistry was great.”
“Slowly but surely. The proper steps are being taken and we hope that we’re going to be out there soon playing for our fans.”
