On This Day: Inter Miami Plays First Friendly Match, Pizarro Scores First Goal

A year ago on this day, Feb. 15, Inter Miami CF played its first friendly match in Club history as part of the team’s first preseason. The game represented an important milestone in the journey to bring top division fútbol back to South Florida as Inter Miami’s inaugural MLS campaign inched closer.

Inter Miami faced the Philadelphia Union at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla., kicking off its participation in the 2020 Suncoast Invitational. The team took the field with goalkeeper Luis Robles, defenders Dylan Nealis, Nicolás Figal, Román Torres and Ben Sweat, midfielders Luis Argudo, Lee Nguyen, Wil Trapp and Victor Ulloa, and attackers Juan Agudelo and Matías Pellegrini in the starting XI.

The match was highlighted by a memorable occasion, when Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro scored the Club’s first goal in an official match only two minutes and a few touches after subbing on in the first half. Pizarro, whose birthday was that same day, slotted a right footed finish inside the box following an assist from Nguyen.
