Neville: "I'm really pleased with the clean sheet"

Inter Miami played to a scoreless draw away against Nashville on Sunday, as the team remained undefeated on the road. Head coach Phil Neville was again impressed by the team’s performance and resilience on the pitch, as it recorded its first clean sheet of the new season.

“I’m really pleased. In a strange way it was probably the performance I enjoyed the most out of the three we had so far, we had to show qualities that maybe people outside the club didn't think that this squad had in terms of fighting, togetherness, spirit,” said Neville.

“From a managers point of view, I’m really pleased with the clean sheet. I’m pleased with the attempt that we had to try and play fútbol and to try and cause problems for Nashville against an outstanding side.”

Neville expressed his enthusiasm as Inter Miami made history with the appearance of 17-year-old Edison Azcona, the Club’s first-ever Homegrown Academy product to feature in an MLS match.

“I’ve got to say, I think it was a big moment for the Club, for the ownership, for the Academy...I think my first press conference they even spoke about how important that is for Inter Miami, producing its own players, players that we produce, players that we’ve coached, and I thought that was a big moment.

“He’s an outstanding little player, he’s got real courage in his play, I saw that when he came on. I think to all those coaches that played a part of his development; you think of Jason [Kreis] last year in the USL team, Darren [Powell], Pato [Martin Paterson]. It should be a massive well-done to them for helping him get to the point where he is at today, and to the boy as well for the hard work that he puts in. We are super proud.”

Defender Ryan Shawcross saw his first full 90 minutes on the pitch for Inter Miami, and was named Heineken Man of the Match for his performance. For Neville, this was exactly what he expected from his experienced defender.

“I was delighted with Ryan, didn’t surprise me one bit. He just came in and looked like he’s been playing MLS fútbol all his life. That’s what he’s been like since day one,” concluded Neville.
