MATCH PREVIEW: Inter Miami CF to Visit the Philadelphia Union in First 2021 Road Match

Inter Miami CF (0-1-0, 0 points) will carry on with MLS regular season action taking on the Philadelphia Union (0-0-1, 1 points) in its first road game of the 2021 campaign. The match at Subaru Park on Saturday, April 24 is set to kick off at 8 p.m. ET.

Inter Miami will continue its second campaign on the road following its season home opener against the LA Galaxy on Sunday. The match saw Inter Miami fall 2-3 in front of a limited capacity sold-out crowd in a tight fixture in which forwards Gonzalo Higuaín and Robbie Robinson scored the team’s first goals of the season. It was Robinson’s first goal as a professional and Higuaín’s, who also registered an assist in the match, first of the campaign. Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro played a pivotal role in the match as well, registering a secondary assist for the first goal and drawing the foul that caused the penalty that Higuaín scored.

"Philadelphia has a real identity. They play with high energy, they have got a good style, they have a fantastic coach and it's a difficult game. Particularly when you go to Philadelphia, which is a tough place to go get a result in. So it's a big challenge for us, and I think the challenge and what I want to see is how we react, how we respond as a group to what was a disappointing result on Sunday", said Inter Miami CF head coach Phil Neville. "I'm excited. I know it's going to be a tough game and we are going to have to play even better than we did against the LA Galaxy to get a result."

Third Matchup Against Philadelphia

Saturday’s matchup will see Inter Miami take on the Philadelphia Union for the third time in Club history in Philadelphia’s 2021 season home opener at Subaru Park. The first time the sides met in July 2020, Inter Miami debuted its secondary kit for its inaugural campaign, the “RosaNegra”, and registered its first goal wearing the kit as well, with Pizarro scoring the goal.

Familiar Faces

The match may also feature a series of reunions between former teammates or rivals for Inter Miami and Philadelphia Union players, and even executives and coaching staff members. Notably, Inter Miami Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson will meet a former rival, Philadelphia’s head coach Jim Curtin, as both played each other on 13 occasions during their playing careers.

Defender / midfielder Brek Shea will potentially face his former teammate Aurélien Collin, who he played alongside in 16 matches between 2015 and 2016 during their time as Orlando City SC players. Both players also faced each other four times in MLS action.

Inter Miami midfielder Jay Chapman may face former Toronto FC teammate Joe Bendik; both players shared on the pitch together four times in 2015. Bendik was also teammates with Inter Miami’s Shea, playing 27 matches together for Orlando in the 2016 campaign. The pair have also played each other three times in MLS action.

In addition, Inter Miami defender Joevin Jones has faced Philadelphia’s goalkeeper Andre Blake three times in international fixtures between Trinidad & Tobago and Jamaica. On the other hand, winger Lewis Morgan may reunite with Stuart Findlay, who he faced once in 2018 during his time with Celtic FC in his native Scotland. Lastly, Inter Miami goalkeeper John McCarthy will also be facing several former teammates over the weekend, as he played for Philadelphia from 2015 to 2018.

Philadelphia's Record

The 2020 Supporters' Shield champions will come into this weekend’s game following a scoreless draw against 2020 MLS champions Columbus Crew in their first matchup of the 2021 regular season.
