Inter Miami CF (1-1-0, 3 points) will carry on with MLS regular season action with a visit to Nissan Stadium for a matchup against Nashville S.C. (0-0-2, 2 points) on Sunday, May 2 at 1 p.m. ET.
Inter Miami will continue its second campaign on the road following its first win of the season by overcoming the Philadelphia Union at Subaru Park. The match saw the team overturn a 0-1 deficit to clinch a 1-2 win with goals from midfielder Federico Higuaín and forward Gonzalo Higuaín, who made history by becoming the first set of brothers to both score in an MLS match in the league’s history; it was just the eighth time in MLS history a pair of brothers connected for a goal. Notably, Inter Miami Chief Soccer Officer and Sporting Director Chris Henderson connected with his brother Sean Henderson for a goal in June 1997. Additionally, Inter Miami head coach Phil Neville claimed his first win at the helm of a club team and defender Ryan Shawcross made his debut for the team. Lastly, Nicolás Figal and Federico Higuaíin approach the match after being named to the MLS Team of the Week due to their heroics in Saturday’s victory.
Gonzalo Higuaín has spearheaded the team’s attack thus far this campaign, ranking as the team’s top scorer with two goals and also recording one assist.
"Like we said after the game, this is just the start of the journey. We’ve had two really good performances and one good result. The road is long...It’s about focusing on the next game, " said Inter Miami CF head coach Phil Neville.
“We just have to make sure we find our rhythm and the quality and confidence that we showed in Philadelphia and against the LA Galaxy, that is the challenge for us on Sunday against a team [Nashville SC] that I think has been unlucky. They probably should have had six points from the first two games with the amount of chances and opportunities they create, and the pressure they put on the opposition. They’re an outstanding team with a brilliant manager.”
The match will be broadcast on ESPN and ESPN Deportes. Fans worldwide can follow live updates including video highlights and stats on the Club’s App. Download and Register your Profile here: https://www.intermiamicf.com/en/club/app.
Sunday’s fixture will mark the fourth time Inter Miami and Nashville SC meet, with the 2020 expansion sides previously matching up in two regular season games and Inter Miami’s historic first MLS Cup Playoffs appearance last season.
Four players may be eligible to make their Inter Miami debuts in Sunday’s showdown: Edison Azcona, Drake Callender, Dylan Castanheira and Felipe Valencia.
The match may also feature a series of reunions between former teammates or rivals for Inter Miami and Nashville players. Former FC Dallas players, Inter Miami’s Brek Shea, Victor Ulloa and Nashville’s Dax McCarty and Walker Zimmerman will have the opportunity to face each other. Ulloa and Zimmerman were teammates at FC Dallas from 2013 to 2017, where they were members of the 2016 Supporters’ Shield-winning side. They have faced each other four times in MLS regular season action since then. Meanwhile, Shea and McCarty were FC Dallas teammates from 2008 to 2010, sharing the pitch 88 times and subsequently squaring off six times in MLS action.
Inter Miami’s Joevin Jones and Shea will have the opportunity to face Jalil Anibaba, who they’ve played against five and six times respectively in MLS action. Shea has also previously faced Nashville’s Dominique Badji seven times. Goalkeepers John McCarthy and Joe Willis, meanwhile, will have the opportunity to battle it out once again after clashing twice before in MLS matches. Mexican international Rodolfo Pizarro and Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuaín have played against Nashville’s Panamanian midfielder Anibal Godoy a combined total of eight times with their national teams. Lastly, Nashville’s Dylan Nealis will be facing a host of former teammates after featuring as part of Inter Miami’s roster for the team’s inaugural campaign in 2020.
Additionally, Neville returns to Nissan Stadium after leading England Women’s National Team in the She Believes Cup on March 2nd, 2019, in a draw against the United States.
Nashville will come into this weekend’s game following two draws in its first two 2021 MLS regular season fixtures, drawing 2-2 against FC Cincinnati and again drawing with the same score against CF Montréal in its last match. Winger Randall Leal has stood out for the team in its first two matches, registering two assists and a goal.
