Inter Miami CF announced today that attacking midfielder Lewis Morgan has been named the team’s Most Valuable Player in the Club’s inaugural season.
The Scottish winger's efforts were pivotal throughout the entire season, as he topped the team’s scoring and assist charts, with five and eight to his name respectively, helping Inter Miami clinch a historic playoff berth.
“It’s a great honor to be the first Inter Miami MVP. We’ve had a season of firsts; first game, first home opener, and to add to that list and be the inaugural MVP in the team’s first season is a great honor for me,” said Morgan.
“This accomplishment is actually something that I kind of targeted. It’s important to set high standards for yourself and it’s something that I aimed for at the start of the year,” he added.
The 24-year-old Greenock, Scotland, native arrived at Inter Miami in Jan. 2020 from prestigious Scottish Premier League side Celtic FC and his impact was immediately felt, registering an assist on the team’s first-ever goal in the Club’s MLS debut back in March. Since then he became a mainstay in the team’s lineups, starting in all 23 regular season matches and the playoff fixture, the only player on the inaugural roster to achieve the mark.
It wasn’t only among Inter Miami players that Morgan shined, as he was a standout figure in the 2020 MLS season. The winger exhibited his playmaking abilities all year, finishing the campaign tied for first in MLS with 14 big chances created in the regular season and second in MLS with 65 chances created, only behind Toronto FC’s Alejandro Pozuelo’s 70, who was named the MLS 2020 MVP.
Morgan attributes his success on the field throughout Inter Miami’s challenging debut season to the unity prevalent within the organization.
“I think one of the things that helped me stay consistent mentally is the fact that we had 25 guys in the locker room who were all in the exact same boat. We had all moved to a new club and we were all trying to adapt to a new way of life”, he expressed. “The 24 other guys in that changing room were there to help me. Having those guys by my side, the training staff, everyone, everything was in place. Just having that support network around was something that I think that allowed me to flourish on the pitch.”
Now, Inter Miami fans have a lot to look forward to following the Scotsman’s fine introduction to the league, as Morgan feels settled in South Florida after a transition year packed with unprecedented circumstances.
“I think Inter Miami fans can expect to see a better version of myself [next season]. I had a year under my belt to adapt to the league and the surrounding things that come with that, including the pandemic, and I feel going into next year I’m ready to explode onto the scene and show a better version of what the fans got to see last year.”
Personally, Morgan remains as ambitious as ever and is hungry for more as the 2021 campaign looms.
“There are lots of aspects of my game that need work and as players we always need to evolve and improve. As a forward-thinking player, you are judged on goals and assists and going forward into next year it's about setting the bar higher and never settling with what you just achieved. Going into next year I hope to hit double figures with goals and assists.
“Next year, hopefully I can win the overall league award. It's a target I set for myself and I’m always trying to set the bar high and trying to hit those targets,” he concluded.
