Following the first meeting, Karriem Edwards, the Vice President of the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County, reflected on the experience.
“Truth be told, because of the clientele that we serve, many of our kids are facing challenges on a day-to-day basis that many adults can’t handle, so having a little respite from that, a positive experience like this, it gives them strength, a little bit of optimism to help keep enduring the challenges,” said Edwards.
“I think that soccer goes beyond just two teams playing on the field, it involves the fans, and it involves the community, and being able to play for a team that has that in mind is very important to me. I would really like to help Erik understand the importance of school and sports, that there’s a balance between the two and that you can take what you learn on the field and in the classroom and combine them to figure out a technique, routine or a method that works best for you. I think we’re all unique and for him, it would be great if he could start to figure out what works for him,” said First Team goalkeeper Callender after meeting his mentee Erik.
