Inter Miami’s inaugural season was filled with memorable moments as the Club brought first division fútbol back to South Florida for the first time in nearly 20 years. The team fought through unprecedented circumstances to become just the seventh MLS franchise to qualify for the playoffs in its first season. The inaugural class of Inter Miami players helped make the Club’s first season memorable, so we will be reviewing their contributions by position group in this series.

Defenders

Inter Miami’s backline featured a healthy mix of newcomers and experienced MLS players. The group also boasted considerable depth, with 10 defenders receiving playing time: Mikey Ambrose, A.J. DeLaGarza, Nicolás Figal, Leandro González Pirez, Christian Makoun, Dylan Nealis, Alvas Powell, Andrés Reyes, Ben Sweat and Román Torres.

The group was headed by a triumvirate of central defenders in Figal, LGP and Reyes, as well as a fullback pairing of the MLS veteran Sweat and rookie Nealis. Thanks to their versatility, a number of these players featured across several different positions throughout the season, perhaps most notably Figal who split his time between center back and right back.

Figal brought years of experience with him from the Argentine top flight and immediately slotted into the Inter Miami defense. He started in the Club’s debut match on March 1 and went on to start every match from then until late October when an injury cut his regular season short with two games remaining.
