Inter Miami’s latest acquisition, midfielder Federico Higuaín, has joined the team in training and will be eligible for selection in the team’s next match. The veteran midfielder could make his Club debut in the team’s midweek home match against Atlanta United.
Higuaín arrived in South Florida motivated to thrive with his new Club. The midfielder has found immense success in his years in MLS, registering 61 goals and 68 assists in 217 appearances, earning MLS Newcomer of the Year honors in 2012, leading the Columbus Crew to the MLS Cup Final in 2015, and becoming only the 19th player in history to register at least 50 goals and 50 assists in MLS. Still, he is driven to find more success with Inter Miami.
“I’m here to play fútbol. Throughout my whole time in MLS I have guaranteed hard work. I will also try to play the best fútbol I can,” said Higuaín. “I’m new in this team, I need time to get to know all of my teammates and to understand the idea of the Club, but I know it needs to happen quickly for me. So, I hope that I can play good fútbol and that I can help this Club and this team as much as possible.
“Physically I feel good. What I bring to the team is what everybody knows about me; I’ve played in this league a long time and I hope to be able to help in whatever role I’m needed for, both on and off the field. I love fútbol, it’s been my life since I was little and I hope to continue doing it for as long as I can.”
Manager Diego Alonso, meanwhile, is excited by the addition of another versatile weapon to his squad.
“I think that he can help us on the field in various positions. He’s a player who can play as a second striker, a ten, and he’s played as a winger at times, or he can play centrally. He gives us options there and he can help us off the field with his experience. He knows the league and he’s a useful player for us now. We’ve had some players leave, and in the absence of [Rodolfo] Pizarro and [Juan] Agudelo, there was a spot that he fills perfectly.
“He can give us quality, he’s shown it for a long time in MLS. He gives us experience with the time he’s played here and he can give us some characteristics that the team didn’t have.”
The MLS veteran will join his younger brother Gonzalo on the Inter Miami roster, marking the first time they share a team since the beginnings of their careers at River Plate. When the team faces Atlanta United on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 8 p.m. ET, the brothers will have a chance to fulfill another lifelong dream of sharing the field again.
“When this opportunity came, it was amazing for me. It’s going to be a great experience to play for this Club and to play next to my brother. It was one of our dreams when we were kids and we are making it a reality,” said Federico. “For me, playing for this new franchise is important, working with this coaching staff that has already shown its capability, and obviously playing on a team with my brother, which is something we’re really happy about.”
